ORILLIA, ONTARIO – On Wednesday, Georgian College’s Orillia campus became a real-life training center for the Ontario Provincial Police.

“Today’s training went well and I’m happy with the outcome,” said Brent Elbers, Orillia OPP detachment Operations Manager and Staff Sergeant.

Code-named “Camden”, the training exercise involved multiple community partners including the Orillia OPP, Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), Central Region In-Service Training (IST), Simcoe County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Orillia Fire and Georgian College staff and students.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders geared up and headed towards the simulated threat, while other first responders stayed back to set up command and close down the area.

To help make the exercise most realistic, injured victims of all degrees were played by Georgian College students.

Once the OPP had deemed the scene “safe”, paramedics and Orillia Fire services moved in to assess the scene and help treat any simulated victims that were discovered.

Crews set up a staging area for all the simulated injured victims and were helped by the Simcoe County Emergency Medical Services.

The simulated training exercise lasted roughly half an hour and was focused on, Testing and validating existing plans, procedures, training, equipment, and interagency communication; Improving interagency response, coordination, and operation; Identifying gaps in training, resources, and procedures as well as identify areas for improvement; Improving individual, organizational and community performance through practice; and Demonstrating community and organizational resolve to adequately prepare for, and respond to emergencies of all types.
